Food, Water & Shelter
Amma’s dream is for everyone in the world to be able to sleep without fear, at least for one night; for everyone to be able to eat to their fill, at least for one day. She says that by doing selfless service for at least one day, everyone should help the poor and needy.
“There are two types of poverty in the world. The first type is due to the lack of food, clothing and shelter. The second type is the poverty of love and compassion. We need to deal with the second type of poverty first. If we have love and compassion, we will wholeheartedly serve and help those who lack food, clothing and shelter.”
– Amma
Why it Matters
More than 26% of the world population suffer from food insecurity. By 2030, 1.6 billion people will lack drinking water.
As a result of poor shelter, polluted water and inadequate sanitation, 50,000 people—mostly women and children—die each day. The problem is disproportionately concentrated in the developing world.
